New Fences for Bisley Nature Reserve

Category News

Friends of Bisey Nature Reserve (FOBNR) are making good progress in their mission to restore Bisley Nature Reserve (BNR) to its former glory.

The group in collaboration with the Msunduzi Municipality, has recently completed the first stages of repairing the key fences around the reserve. FOBNR member, Pete West, who oversaw the repairs, said they had hired a local contractor, who did and "excellent job." The design makes the fence more visible and should prevent animals escaping.

Donations towards the first stage of the fence repairs were made by Intaba Ridge Community members and the developer, as well as Birding South Africa , the Thurlow Honorary Officers Group and other individuals. A large donation for the second phase has already been received from Colin van Heerden of Rocky Valley. Edith Dennison, FOBNR interim chairperson, said that FOBNR has also replaced the rusted dust-bins around the reserve and ensures that waste and litter is removed regularly. "Measures to restore the bird-hide have also begun, with Gus Overdale and his team removing the stones blocking the flow out of the bird-hide dam.A bridge is being put in place over the river, allowing pedestrians and cyclists to cross the river more easily.

The new fences will go a long way to contain the animals within the reserve and protect them from poachers and snares. Anybody interested in contibuting towards the FOBNR van contact Edith on Elliot.Edith018@gmail.com
